A proper breast massage is more than just rubbing your breast, and indeed this type of massage has roots in ayurvedic medicine. “Abhyanga is a rhythmic, light-touch massage that uses large amounts of vegetable oil,” says Julie Bernier, certified ayurvedic practitioner and massage therapist. “The ancient ayurvedic sages advised us to do abhyanga ourselves every day to maintain our health.” Although this traditional practice includes massaging the breasts, it also focuses on the whole body. For the breasts, it includes gently massaging the tissues in this area, especially in circular motions.

“Breast massage can improve circulation and help detox,” says Torrie Thompson, head health coach at Modern Holistic Health. “The breasts are part of the lymphatic system that carries toxins and unwanted substances throughout the body.” And since many women have lymph drainage blockages due to bras, lack of exercise, and even scars, having a breast massage can help clear blockages and flush out toxins from the body more effectively.
Breast massage can also benefit breastfeeding mothers. Bernier, “Breastfeeding women, ayurvedic way

- There are a few things you need to be sure of before you start breast massage. First, you will need some type of massage oil. According to Bernier, one of the most commonly used oils in ayurvedic massage is sesame oil, but you can also use jojoba, olive, coconut oil or any of the natural oils you have on hand.
- Use the first four fingers of your hand to apply gentle pressure in circular motions. You should start close to the nipple and work your way out of the breast. Repeat this process until you have massaged the entire breast.
- Bring four fingers just below the armpit with the weight of your palm to the outside of your chest. Gently push the breast towards the other side of your body.
- Next, place your fingertips in the crease of your armpit and gently drag your skin in a circular motion a few inches toward the center of your body. You’ll want to repeat this as you move from collarbone to shoulder to neck.
- Be sure to gently pat down along the breastbone, repeating on the other breast.
- If you experience sensitivity, lighten your touch.
- It is always best to consult your doctor if you feel any pain during the massage or are concerned about any negative side effects. But overall, the whole experience should be relaxing and enjoyable.
- The frequency of the massage is entirely up to you. Bernier says traditional ayurvedic practice suggests doing this daily, but he believes once a week is more realistic for today’s culture.
