How about babies’ dental care? | Mother

Although your baby’s baby teeth are temporary, it is important to develop the habit of providing them with good care. If milk teeth are lost early due to caries, the balance in the mouth may be disturbed. Other teeth can move towards the opened space and narrow the places of permanent teeth coming from below. This can cause deformity, and this can lead to consequences that disrupt speech development.

The baby’s first teeth begin to emerge around 6-8 months. When the average age of 2.5-3 is completed, tooth eruption is completed and with the completion of the back teeth, there are 20 milk teeth in the mouth. The following can be said for those who wonder about baby tooth brushing age; Teeth cleaning of babies should be done from the appearance of the teeth. It is necessary to start the regular brushing habit after breakfast in the morning and before going to bed in the evening from the age of 2-2.5.

You can gently wipe your baby’s teeth and the front of his tongue using a clean cloth or moistened cotton. From the age of 1, you can also use soft toothbrushes suitable for your baby. The brush that is started to be used must be thoroughly cleaned after use and replaced with a new one at least every 3 months. Of course, this period may be earlier than the wear of the brush.

Toothpaste for babies has now become an individually formulated product. Nevertheless, by thoroughly researching the ingredients, it seems more appropriate not to use toothpaste until young children are able to rinse their mouths with water and spit, that is, until the age of 3. Although some dentists say that a good mechanical brushing is enough, cleaning teeth without using toothpaste is uncomfortable for many parents. Even if you use toothpastes formulated suitable for children’s health, you do not have to use too much. It is recommended to use a lentil or a pea-sized amount and allow your child to rinse his mouth thoroughly.

Milk has a content that does not cause tooth decay, but sleeping with a baby bottle with milk teeth or giving acidic and sugary foods such as fruit juice in the bottle for a long time can cause the condition called “bottle caries”. Special attention should be paid to the dental care of babies who buy a bottle. It is recommended to avoid the habit of sleeping with a bottle as much as possible in order to prevent bottle bruises that can occur due to the baby’s mouth sleeping with a bottle. If possible, you can give your baby the last bottle of water to rinse his mouth. If there is no abnormal situation, the first dentist check in babies should be done once until the age of 2. Then the controls should be done regularly every 6 months.

According to the information provided by the experts, the biggest factor in children’s fear of the dentist is that the mother, father and people in their close environment make negative speeches about the dentist and the speeches that reflect their fears in the presence of the children. Even if the child has never been to a dentist before, he can learn from his parents about his fear of the dentist. If an adult visiting the dentist expresses that he feels better after the visit and that he is happy after the treatment, he gives a positive message to the child about the dental examination. A good dialogue with the dentist also helps the child to get used to the orthodontist. Thus, the child learns that the dentist visit is not an extraordinary and fearful situation, but a normal and regular health check.

How can we teach babies and children to brush their teeth?

It is of course the first step to get children to brush their teeth regularly every day. It is important for adults to be an example of brushing their teeth. When you come to the moon, which can grasp the toothbrush and put it in its mouth, you can encourage your baby to experience self-brushing. Brushing teeth for your baby is primarily a game. By giving him toothbrushes that he can grasp comfortably and are safe for babies, you can offer him brushing as a part of his life, just like he is feeding him. Give him the opportunity to try tooth cleaning after you have done it. Thus, after the age of 2.5 years, after all his teeth are removed, he asked him “How are teeth brushed?” You can teach tooth brushing with a game on the subject. Of course, you should accompany him in all steps and make sure that the teeth are thoroughly cleaned.

How should brushing be?

As children develop fine motor skills such as using forks and spoons around the age of 2, they can also be guided about brushing their teeth. Of course, even if they are not at the level to clean enough teeth on their own, it is a good period to develop a habit. At the same time, stubbornness is also common, so be careful not to force your teeth brushing and just encourage them and present them as a game. When your child goes to the pre-school education institution, he / she will get a lot of information on this subject.

Help your child wash their hands before brushing, show them how to hold the brush, and spread a pea-sized amount of toothpaste on the dry brush. Start with the teeth closed and brush in short, gentle and circular motions. Proceed by touching a tooth for 8-10 times. Brush the chewing and biting surfaces of the teeth in a back and forth motion. Make sweeping movements from the gum to the tooth on the inner surfaces. Brush the tongue surface from the back to the front and let him rinse his mouth 2-3 times with plenty of water. After washing the toothbrush, leave it in a clean container to dry, upright, away from contact with other brushes.

What can you do if your child is not brushing their teeth?

Dental health in children is also directly related to nutrition. Good nutrition and tooth brushing are very important for dental health. It is necessary to include foods with high nutritional value and useful for tooth development in child nutrition. If for some reason your child is going to sleep or go out without brushing his teeth, you can have him throw a piece of cheese in his mouth. Cheese plays an important role in making the oral environment that becomes acidic during meals and in protecting the teeth.
