The coronavirus, which emerged in Wuhan, China and swept the world, is emerging every day. Disruptions in the functions of our lungs and processes that threaten heart health are the main damage caused by the virus to our body. One of the problems that patients with Covid-19 complain about is hair loss. Saying that febrile diseases can cause hair loss, Hair Transplant Specialist Özge Kara underlined that hair loss complaints increased during the pandemic process. Kara said that reasons such as stress, infection, medications, traumatic events, and inflammatory diseases cause hair loss.
“Hair loss is not a symptom, it is a condition that occurs after the disease”
Speaking about the complaints of increasing hair loss in recent years, Kara said, “In those who have had Covid-19 infection, hair loss may occur after the disease. Not only Covid-19, but also factors caused by stress, infection, febrile diseases, diets with intense weight loss, postpartum, thyroid diseases and nutritional deficiencies such as iron, zinc and biotin deficiency can cause hair loss. Kara added that hair loss in those who have the disease is not a symptom.
Stating that the quarantine that has been taking for months in order not to be sick during the pandemic process may have caused vitamin D deficiency, Kara said, “The quarantine process affected the psychology as well as the physical. I have to mention that all these negatively affect the health of the hair. Staying at home for a long time due to the epidemic, spending about 1 year with stress, anxiety, and sadness caused a serious increase in hair loss, ”he said.
Hair loss due to Covid-19 is a temporary problem
Saying that there is an increase in problems such as alopecia areata known as ringworm, male pattern shedding (androgenetic alopecia), gray color change in hair, Kara said, “Hair loss seen after corona treatment is usually temporary and is expected to return to normal after 3-4 months. . “If the general condition of the person is good, if he is able to cope with stress, if his nutrition is balanced and sufficient, new, normal, healthy growing hair is usually started to be followed” he said.
Özge Kara, who added that if the hair loss prolongs in time, should definitely be taken, Özge Kara stated that nutrition is important in hair development. Noting that foods rich in protein, iron, biotin, zinc and vitamin D should be consumed, Özge Kara said, “These foods are generally sufficient for healthy people. However, special supplements that are rich in vitamins and minerals such as iron, biotin, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids and recommended by the doctor can also be used in people with rapid hair loss and malnutrition. Continued stress causes slow recovery, especially in people with hair loss. For this reason, people who have difficulties in coping with stress are recommended to seek psychological support “.
